Mae Huff Obituary, Cause Of Death, Roanoke City Public Schools, Mourns Loss Of Board Member
Roanoke City has lost a dedicated public servant and a guiding light in former School Board member Mae Huff, fondly remembered by her colleagues as “the Board’s conscience.” A proud graduate of Lucy Addison High School in 1967, Mrs. Huff’s commitment to her community was a lifelong endeavor, extending from her career with the City of Roanoke into her impactful nine years of service on the School Board.
During her tenure, Mrs. Huff was a driving force behind significant advancements in education. She played a pivotal role in establishing Roanoke City Public Schools’ (RCPS) first Equity Resolution and Policy, a landmark commitment to ensuring fair and equitable educational opportunities for every student. Her dedication to enriching the student experience was also evident in her strong advocacy for expanding fine arts and extracurricular programs, believing in the holistic development of young minds.
Furthermore, Mrs. Huff’s vision extended to making higher education accessible. She championed the creation of the Community College Access Program, a vital partnership with Virginia Western Community College. This program, which continues to thrive, offers eligible graduates the invaluable opportunity to pursue further education without financial burden.
Mrs. Huff also understood the importance of honoring history while shaping the future. As president of Lucy Addison High School Monument Wall, Inc., she led her fellow alumni in a meaningful effort to commemorate the legacy of Miss Addison and the countless students who walked the halls of the historic school, now Lucy Addison Middle School.
Through her direct and indirect contributions, Mae Huff touched the lives of thousands of Roanokers. Her unwavering dedication to public service has left an indelible mark, and her legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire and benefit the community for years to come. Our deepest condolences are extended to her family and friends as we join together in remembering this remarkable woman.
