The electronic music community is mourning the loss of Martin Wheeler, the UK DJ and producer known to the world as Vector Lovers. Wheeler, a gifted artist whose sonic explorations spanned the intricate realms of IDM, the driving pulse of electro, and the serene landscapes of ambient music, passed away recently. The news was shared by fellow electronic pioneers The Black Dog via Instagram, who remembered Wheeler as a “lovely bloke” whose absence will be deeply felt.

Born in Reading, Wheeler first emerged on the scene in the early 2000s, crafting his distinctive sound under the Vector Lovers moniker. His early work, released on his own Iwari label, included his self-titled debut album in 2004 and the subsequent “Capsule For One” in 2005. These releases quickly established him as a unique voice, blending complex rhythms with emotive textures.

His talent caught the attention of Glasgow’s esteemed Soma Records, a label synonymous with forward-thinking electronic music. Under Soma’s wing, Wheeler released a string of acclaimed albums, including “Afterglow” (2007), “Vector Lovers” (2008), and “iPhonica” (2013), further cementing his reputation as a versatile and innovative producer. Beyond his primary alias, Wheeler also explored different facets of his creativity under guises such as Rosenbaum and Badly Born Droid.

Wheeler’s influence extended beyond his solo projects. In 2007, he contributed his production and programming skills to “Out Of The Woods,” the album by Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn, showcasing his ability to collaborate and adapt his sound. His commitment to his craft remained unwavering, with new releases as Vector Lovers continuing throughout the 2010s and into the 2020s, including EPs and archival collections. He also graced the decks at renowned clubs like Fuse, The Arches, and Electrowerkz, sharing his passion for electronic music with audiences. A special edition reissue of “Capsule For One” by Lapsus Records in 2022, featuring remixes and unreleased tracks, served as a testament to his enduring legacy. Vector Lovers’ unique contribution to electronic music will be remembered and cherished.
