Thomas H. “Tommy” Miller Obituary, IAFF Mourns the Loss of General Secretary-Treasurer
The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Thomas H. “Tommy” Miller, a distinguished leader and tireless advocate for fire fighters and paramedics. Tommy’s legacy is one of profound dedication, unwavering commitment, and a genuine desire to serve others, a mission he pursued for nearly five decades.
A proud second-generation fire fighter, Tommy followed in the footsteps of his father, a path that ignited a lifelong passion for the profession. His early career included service in the United States Navy, instilling in him a strong sense of duty and discipline. He dedicated 37 years of his life to serving the citizens of Indianapolis as a member of the Indianapolis Fire Department, where he earned the respect of his peers through his bravery and commitment.
Tommy’s leadership extended far beyond the firehouse. He was a formidable union advocate, ascending through the ranks to make a significant impact on the lives of fire fighters and paramedics across Indiana and North America. He served with distinction as president of the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana, demonstrating his ability to unite and inspire. His influence grew further as he took on the role of IAFF 8th District vice president, representing the interests of a vast region.
His most impactful service to the IAFF came during his tenure as General Secretary-Treasurer from 2010 until his retirement in 2016. In this critical role, Tommy managed the financial well-being of the Association with integrity and foresight, ensuring the continued strength and effectiveness of the IAFF. He approached his work with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by fire fighters and a steadfast resolve to secure the best possible outcomes for them and their families.
Tommy’s own words reveal the core of his character: he wished to be remembered as someone who helped people. Across his remarkable career in union service, he embodied this sentiment, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless fire fighters, retirees, and their loved ones. His dedication fostered improvements in working conditions, benefits, and overall quality of life for those who bravely serve our communities.
The IAFF extends its deepest condolences to his devoted wife, Barb, their children Stephanie, Thomas, Joseph (and his wife Madison), and Claire, and his cherished grandson, Benjamin.
